SELECTED BY HIS PEERS 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 AND 2012 AS MARYLAND SUPER LAWYER CRIMINAL DEFENSE: DUI/DWI
If you are charged with a DUI, please call our office at 866-435-2795 immediately
as there are certain critical time limits for your case.
I am a former Assistant State's Attorney for Baltimore City and have been in the private practice of criminal and drunk driving law for over 30 years. My tag says "No Plea" because I am known for trying cases. Many lawyers look to get in and out of court as quickly as possible. My objective is to secure the best possible outcome for my clients. I'm no pallbearer. I handle all state and federal criminal and traffic matters, including appeals to the Court of Special Appeals and the Court of Appeals. I am a member of the National College for DUI Defense (NCDD). I can assist with criminal and DUI matters throughout Maryland including Anne Arundel County (Annapolis and Glen Burnie), Baltimore County (Catonsville, Towson, and Essex), Carroll County, Cecil County, Harford County, Howard County, and Baltimore City.
I have been named Maryland Super Lawyer for Criminal Defense: DWI/DUI for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. I have also been selected for inclusion in the 2010 and 2011 editions of The Best Lawyers In America in the specialty of DUI/DWI Defense.
In addition to DUI defense, I am actively engaged in the defense of people accused of all criminal matters. The defense of drug distribution and drug possession cases make up a considerable part of my criminal practice.
I have co-authored books and taught continuing legal education courses for criminal defense lawyers since 1982.
These are reference books that even the judges make use of:
- "Handling DWI Cases"
- "Criminal Practice and Procedure in the District Court of Maryland"
In November 2003 I successfully completed the 24 hour National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) training course for administration of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. This training provides me with an inside look at the actual police training and what was required at the roadside when you were administered these exercises.
DUI CASES
I have been lecturing on the defense of these cases to Maryland lawyers, judges, prosecutors, and police for over 20 years. Drunken driving cases are not easy to defend. The proper defense of a drunk driving case requires at a minimum, knowledge of the client's medical, educational, and emotional background; field sobriety testing; and the operation of the breath testing equipment. Not all lawyers educate themselves or are willing to spend the time preparing and trying these cases. There is no expedient way for a lawyer to keep your driving privilege and keep you out of jail.
There are no guarantees that a lawyer can give other than to use his expertise and skill to work diligently on the defense of your case. Judges' assignments are constantly rotated, and any reliance on a statement that a certain judge will hear your case and go easy is just an attempt to gain your business. You have no recourse when the "easy" judge is not sitting the day of your trial and you show up unprepared for trial. Every case should be prepared for trial, even if there is a likelihood of a plea. This is how I practice law, and my clients have the assurance that their case is as important to me as it is to them.
CRIMINAL CASES
I have tried every type of criminal case as a prosecutor as well as a defense attorney. As a prosecutor I was in the misdemeanor trial division, the white-collar fraud division, and the felony trial division.
As a defense attorney I have defended people charged with petty offenses, public corruption offenses, and murder. My criminal practice is not limited to one area. I defend people in State Court as well as Federal Court.

Videotape Scam
I just finished a case where the state trooper put the client in front of the CLIENT’S car for the SFSTS. Huh??? The client was tall enough that you could see some of the movement of the head and torso. Otherwise, you might as well have turned the camera off. The client wanted to take [...] -
Interlock update
A repeat offender with breath test of .08-.14 who has a prior .08-.14 in the last 5 years is now interlock eligible without a Hearing. That is because the offender is no longer eligible for a restricted driver’s license. That does not mean that the ALJs are going to interpret this as meaning that they [...] -
2nd State Trooper whose videos do not match his reports
Yesterday I was in court where the tape and printed word did not match. But for the fact my client did poorly on 1 of the SFSTS, it would have been a trial. The tape supported a plea to the lesser offense as there was a medical issue surrounding the breath test. A second lawyer [...]
